Our work and priorities

Practical pathways to dignity, safety and opportunity.

Nyar Kwata Foundation works across connected areas that shape the wellbeing and future of women, girls and families: livelihoods, education, health information, safety, equality, creative expression, community participation and a healthy environment. Our programmes respond to the realities of everyday life and build on the strengths already present in local communities.

A mentor guiding a learner through a hands-on creative skills activity

Practical skills, livelihoods and enterprise

For many households in Uganda, income is irregular and the cost of food, school needs, transport, rent and healthcare can quickly stretch a family’s budget. Practical skills and livelihood development help women and young people widen their choices, strengthen self-reliance and build confidence in their ability to earn.

Through creative and vocational learning, enterprise awareness, mentorship, financial literacy and links to markets, the foundation supports pathways from learning a skill to using it productively. Knitting and handmade crafts are part of this story, alongside a wider commitment to practical skills that can grow into sustainable livelihoods.

Education, mentorship and life skills

Education is one of the strongest ways to widen a child’s future choices, yet poverty can make the everyday costs of learning difficult to meet. Uniforms, books, transport, scholastic materials and household responsibilities can all affect a girl’s ability to remain in school and participate fully.

Nyar Kwata Foundation promotes learning, mentorship and life skills that help girls and young women build confidence, set goals, make informed decisions and see possibilities beyond the limits of their circumstances. Encouragement, guidance and access to useful learning resources can help young people stay engaged and prepare for further education, training and work.

Health information and family wellbeing

Health affects every part of family life. When people lack clear information, they may delay seeking help, struggle to recognise warning signs or find it difficult to navigate available services. Women and girls also face specific health information needs that are often left unspoken.

The foundation promotes accessible health information and awareness on family wellbeing, hygiene, nutrition, menstrual health and preventive care. By encouraging informed choices and connections with appropriate health services, this work helps individuals and families protect their wellbeing and make decisions with greater confidence.

Community outreach and engagement with women

Gender equality, protection and anti-racism

Gender-based violence, racism and discrimination deny people safety, dignity and the freedom to participate fully in society. They affect access to education, income, healthcare, leadership and decision-making, while placing additional burdens on women and girls who already face social or economic exclusion.

Nyar Kwata Foundation advocates for equality, challenges harmful attitudes and promotes respectful communities where every person is valued. Through awareness, dialogue, storytelling and community engagement, the foundation encourages prevention, strengthens understanding of rights and supports a culture in which violence and discrimination are not accepted as normal.

Community outreach, family resilience and social inclusion

Poverty is not only a lack of money. It can also mean being isolated from information, services, supportive relationships and opportunities to participate. Families facing disability, discrimination, displacement or other barriers can become overlooked unless communities make a deliberate effort to listen and include them.

Community outreach helps bring people into conversation, identify local strengths and understand the practical challenges affecting households. The foundation promotes family resilience, inclusion and shared responsibility, while encouraging community-led solutions that respect the dignity and voice of the people concerned.

Water, sanitation and environmental wellbeing

Access to safe water, sanitation and a healthy environment has a direct effect on family wellbeing. Where water is difficult to access, women and girls may spend long hours collecting it, leaving less time for school, rest, paid work and other responsibilities. Poor sanitation and environmental degradation also increase health and livelihood pressures.

The foundation supports community awareness and practical action around water, hygiene, sanitation and environmental responsibility. This work encourages healthier surroundings, responsible use of local resources and community participation in building a safer, cleaner environment for present and future generations.

Storytelling, dialogue and women’s voice

When women and girls can tell their own stories, their experiences, talents and ambitions become visible. Storytelling can challenge stereotypes, build understanding and open conversations about issues that are often hidden by shame, silence or unequal power.

The foundation uses dialogue and creative expression to encourage participation, share knowledge and make space for voices that are too often overlooked. By recognising the lived experiences of women and girls, communities can learn from one another and take steps toward fairer, more inclusive relationships.

Girls learning handmade creative skills together

Creative skills and talent development

Creative ability can become a source of confidence, identity and opportunity. From handmade crafts to performance and film, creative learning gives women and young people a chance to discover their strengths, develop discipline, work with others and turn ideas into something meaningful.

The foundation’s early girls’ knitting and craft initiative is one example of this approach. Nyar Kwata Films Studio extends the same belief into acting and the creative industries, with talent discovery, training and production opportunities for emerging performers and technical creatives.

Nyar Kwata Films Studio: talent, craft and opportunity.

Nyar Kwata Films Studio puts the foundation’s belief in dignity and opportunity into action through the creative industries. The studio discovers, nurtures, develops and promotes actors and actresses, while helping young people understand and practise the many crafts that bring a film to life.

Its learning pathway reaches beyond acting to include scriptwriting and story development, cinematography and camera operation, sound recording and editing, and special-effects makeup. These disciplines build communication, creativity, technical confidence and teamwork—skills that can be used across film, television, theatre, digital media, events and other creative work.

For young people whose talent may not have been recognised or who have limited access to equipment and professional networks, the studio creates space to learn by doing, receive mentorship and take part in practical production. It is a platform for discovering potential, building a craft and opening doors to a wider creative economy.

A wider community vision

A connected approach to everyday challenges.

The foundation’s broad mission recognises that opportunity is shaped by more than one factor. A useful skills course has greater value when learners can access materials and potential buyers; education support works best when barriers faced by families are understood; and awareness on safety is stronger when trusted services are available to respond.

The foundation connects practical skills with education, health information, equality advocacy, community voice and environmental wellbeing. These programmes recognise that a stronger future is built when families have both the knowledge and the opportunities to make choices, improve their livelihoods and participate fully in community life.
